Why now?

The appearance of the CO memorial is timed to coincide with the culmination of more than four years of national reflection on the First World War – that is, the centenary of the end of the First World War for COs who were imprisoned until April 1919 – and to carry its message forward indefinitely into the future. It is fitting that the Memorial should appear now, as the right to conscientious objection is being eroded, with conscription returning in half a dozen countries.
