William Girwood

On 27 February 1916, William Girwood applied for total exemption from military service stating: “I desire total exemption on purely conscientious grounds but recognise the Tribunal because I must respect the opinions of those responsible for the Military Service Act. I, therefore, most solemnly affirm that I would stand forever self-condemned if by premeditation I took part in any operations which had for their objective the killing or murdering of my fellow men.”

On 3 March, he was granted exemption from combatant service only. He appealed but the appeal was dismissed.
